Superintendent Update September 2023

September 1, 2023

The first week of school is in the books! There were mixed emotions of course, but by and large, everyone was happy and excited to be back and start what is sure to be an outstanding school year!

Safe, Warm, Dry Bond work from the summer is wrapping up.  A huge Thank You! to the Besser staff and families for being patient as the first week involved a modified pick up and drop off procedure due to ongoing paving work in the parking lot and bus loop.

MStep, Mi-Access, PSAT, and SAT results have been released publicly by the State of Michigan.  Our results are mixed.  We have some bright spots where scores are increasing, but overall, our results remain below the state average.  We continue to focus on improving our results.

NWEA testing will begin this month for elementary and junior high students.  This assessment provides valuable data to help us understand where our students are academically so we can then determine the best course of action to help them excel.  Please remind your students of the importance of being well rested and doing their best when they take these tests.  You can also ask them if they know their NWEA score from last year.

Parents and guardians be aware! Please see this website https://highlightvape.com/ It is highly disturbing that companies are creating vape devices, designed to entice students, which hide the devices in plain sight from teachers, administrators, parents, and guardians. If you are unable to access the website, a company has designed vaping devices that look identical to a highlighter marker that you might use in school or the office.  Vapes are NOT a safe alternative to cigarettes.

Superintendent priorities for the 2023-24 School Year

Raising Academic Achievement

Partnering with Parents

Mental Health and Wellness of Staff and Students

Safe, Warm, Dry Bond

Innovating for the Future

Have a wonderful Holiday weekend!

Our Mission

Building a Strong Foundation to Prepare for Tomorrow's Challenges

Thunder Bay Junior High School serves the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in the Alpena Public School system. Thunder Bay is the only junior high school in the Alpena Public School district and has a student population of over 800.

Built in 1999, our beautiful facility sits on a 77-acre campus. Thunder Bay Junior High School is a single level structure that allows handicapped access to all classrooms. Our campus includes a forested outdoor environmental study area with a stream running through our property. We have spacious grounds with complete physical education facilities, four tennis courts, two softball fields, track and field course, football field, and three outdoor basketball courts.

Thunder Bay Junior High School boasts large, modern classrooms, fully equipped science labs, industrial arts and life management rooms, music complex, three computer labs, modern media center, cafeteria with a performance stage, gym, and fabulous food service preparation and serving facilities. Staff and students enjoy the technology available in each classroom and share the pride of occupying one of the newest buildings in our district.
