We celebrate Flag Day on June 14th to commemorate the adoption of the official American flag in 1777. The day honors the history, symbolism, and values of the Stars and Stripes, serving as a national expression of patriotism, unity, and respect for the country's ideals. The origins and purpose of the holiday run deep in American history:
The First Flag Act: On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that "the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white" and that "the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field".
Grassroots Origins: The holiday was largely championed by Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin teacher who lobbied for decades to have the day recognized, hoping to use the flag to teach immigrant children about American liberty.Official
Recognition: President Woodrow Wilson issued the first presidential proclamation for Flag Day in 1916. It was later formally signed into law as a national observance by President Harry Truman in 1949.
How It's Celebrated: Across the country, communities observe the day by flying the flag outside their homes, holding patriotic parades, organizing essay contests, and performing flag retirement ceremonies for worn flags.
