Constitution Day is celebrated on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution by the delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on that day in 1787.
While the he 4th of July marks independence from Great Britain, September 17 marks the creation of a unified American government and legal framework.
Officially designated as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, the observance honors both the document and everyone who is a U.S. citizen by birth or naturalization.
Federal law requires schools and educational institutions receiving federal funding to hold educational programs about the U.S. Constitution on this day, encouraging students to learn about their rights and responsibilities.
The day serves as a reminder of democracy, individual liberties, the rule of law, and how the Constitution limits government power to protect citizens.
