Q1: How is the number of students determined? Students per class, per school, per bus route, per lunch hour, per recess, per sports team, IA's and teachers per school. How are the numbers determined?
A1: he whole process starts with a simple count of how many students enroll in each grade. This number is then used to calculate how many teachers and staff are needed, and it also determines the school's total funding, since the state provides a set amount of money per child. This spending plan is used to pay for the necessary staff and resources. Finally, other specific rules and factors set the exact numbers: bus rider levels are determined by where students live and safety capacity, class sizes are limited by collectively bargained agreements, and sports team sizes depend on both athletic league rules and the number of students who sign up to play.

A2: For schools to return to a start date after Labor Day, the superintendents from Alpena and other local districts would need to collaboratively decide with the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District (AMA-ESD) to no longer use a state-issued waiver. Historically, a 2005 Michigan law mandated a post-Labor Day start to protect the state's vital tourism industry. However, the law includes a provision that allows school districts to obtain a waiver from the Michigan Department of Education to begin earlier. In our region, the local superintendents and the AMA-ESD work together to create a multi-year "Common Calendar" for all member schools. As part of this process, the AMA-ESD applies for and receives the waiver that permits the current August start date. Since this common calendar is a multi-year plan, the current schedule is set. Therefore, in order to change the start date of future school years not already set in the five year common calendar, community members would need to contact their local school board.

When a school bus comes to a stop and activates its red flashing lights, drivers traveling in both directions are required to come to a complete stop at least 20 feet away from the school bus. Drivers must remain stopped until the school bus resumes moving down the road or turns off its red flashing lights. Drivers who violate this section are guilty of a civil infraction and face fines between $100 and $500, and up to 100 hours of community service.

On an annual basis the district and law enforcement are seeing messages shared repeatedly on social media, and often the same message is edited to replace the school name and then reshared again. When students or adults just repost messages on social media and don’t report through the appropriate channels, it perpetuates fear and creates additional safety issues. It diverts resources from the school and law enforcement, complicates investigations, and makes it challenging to share accurate information with parents in a timely manner, it makes us less safe. Please REPORT and don't REPOST.

This supplemental policy would assist with your out-of-pocket medical expenses (i.e. deductible) should your student sustain an accidental injury while coverage is in effect. Also, if you do not have any insurance on your student, this would be primary for accidental injuries. There is a variety of coverage options and premiums are a one-time payment for the school year.
