Have you ever wondered how our school lunch menus are created? Curious about what goes into deciding a snow day? Or perhaps you’ve been puzzled by terms like "collective bargaining agreement" or wondered why the district can’t purchase gifts for staff?

If so, we invite you to participate in our new "ASK APS" initiative. This is your chance to ask the questions that matter to you. Each month, we’ll select questions that are intriguing, timely, or widely relevant to answer in the Superintendent's Update, Central Office communications, school newsletters, or even at Board meetings.

While we may not be able to address every question, we’re committed to answering as many as we can.

Please note: This form is not intended for questions specific to individual students or situations. For those, please reach out directly to your child’s teacher or principal.

Rest assured, your submissions are completely anonymous—no contact information is collected

Dear APS Parents and Guardians:

If you have not already completed the attached form for the current school year, please complete the form online at https://alpena.familyportal.cloud/ or print, complete and return it to your student’s school. If you need a printed copy to complete feel free to request one from your child’s school.

Responses are down significantly from previous years, while our student need is increasing dramatically. At the current response rates there will be significant funding loss for student supports and the potential for families to lose eligibility for free/reduced lunch.

The Education Benefits Form collects information needed to make sure your child’s school receives state and federal money for education programs. Without this information, APS could lose vital support and services for our students. These programs include, but are not limited to:

• Teaching staff (ex. reading tutors, math tutors, academic & behavior aids)

• Teaching supplies

• Counselors and social workers

• School nurses

• Training for staff

• Parent and community engagement supplies and events

• Chromebooks and iPads

Why does APS need my info?

Data on the Education Benefits Form determines the eligibility of a student. The total number of eligible students is used to determine how much money will be provided to your school. The more forms collected the better.

What do I need to do? Please complete the attached form on paper and return it to your child’s school or online at https://alpena.familyportal.cloud/.

Will this form be secure? Yes

The United Way of Northeast Michigan and Alpena Public Schools (APS) are partnering on a program to allow law enforcement officers in our community either on or off duty to visit any APS school during breakfast or lunch service to join students to eat and receive a complimentary meal. APS Communications Director Lee Fitzpatrick said, “We want to show support and appreciation for our partners in law enforcement and provide locations across Alpena County for a quick break and a meal. The cost of meals will be covered by private donations to a fund set up with the United Way as public schools are prohibited by law from donating the cost of meals for adults. Anyone interested in supporting this project can contact either Lee Fitzpatrick, Communications Director at Alpena Public Schools (989) 358 5043 or fitzpatrickl@alpenaschools.com or Joe Gentry of the United Way of Northeast Michigan (989) 354 2221 or jgentry@unitedwaynemi.org. Tax deductible donations can be made online at https://www.unitedwaynemi.org/ or with a check made payable to the United Way of Northeast Michigan “Eat on the Beat”. “Just as we do with our liaison officer program, we want to build positive, trusting relationships between our students and the officers/troopers/deputies that serve our community”, said Fitzpatrick. “We are thankful for the partnership of United Way of Northeast Michigan to make this project possible”, he added.
