When a school bus comes to a stop and activates its red flashing lights, drivers traveling in both directions are required to come to a complete stop at least 20 feet away from the school bus. Drivers must remain stopped until the school bus resumes moving down the road or turns off its red flashing lights. Drivers who violate this section are guilty of a civil infraction and face fines between $100 and $500, and up to 100 hours of community service.

The United Way of Northeast Michigan and Alpena Public Schools (APS) are partnering on a program to allow our local law enforcement officers either on or off duty to visit any APS school during breakfast or lunch service to join students to eat and receive a complimentary meal. APS Communications Director Lee Fitzpatrick said, “We want to show support and appreciation for our partners in law enforcement and provide locations across Alpena County for a quick break and a meal. All three agencies have made a strong commitment to planning with us and providing for security and safety in our schools. They deserve this acknowledgement and thanks from our community.” The cost of meals will be covered by private donations to a fund set up with the United Way as public schools are prohibited by law from donating the cost of meals for adults. Anyone interested in supporting this project can contact Joe Gentry of the United Way of Northeast Michigan (989) 354 2221 or jgentry@unitedwaynemi.org. Tax deductible donations can be made online at https://www.unitedwaynemi.org/ or with a check made payable to the United Way of Northeast Michigan “Eat on the Beat”. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://youtu.be/4UTaFIfMVaw&sa=D&source=calendar&ust=1746529984360099&usg=AOvVaw0BMfOvrFAAAxZjBFIvWW7N

REPORT Don't REPOST!
The single most effective preventative tool regarding school safety is if you See Something, Say Something. If your child sees or hears something that is concerning, they should say something to an adult or report it online using ok2say.com. On an annual basis the district and law enforcement are seeing messages shared repeatedly on social media, and often the same message is edited to replace the school name and then reshared again. When students or adults just repost messages on social media and don’t report through the appropriate channels, it perpetuates fear and creates additional safety issues. It diverts resources from the school and law enforcement, complicates investigations, and makes it challenging to share accurate information with parents in a timely manner, it makes us less safe. Please REPORT and don't REPOST.
