The autumn equinox is an astronomical event marking the first day of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere, occurring when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward. It signals shorter days and cooler temperatures in the north and signifies the beginning of the equal-length day and night, known as an "equinox" from the Latin for "equal night"
