WHAT IS THE SRTS?
Safe Routes To School (SRTS) initiatives
aim to unite neighborhoods, ease traffic
congestion and air pollution, and
contribute to students’ readiness to learn
in school

PURPOSE OF SRTS
Enable and encourage children,
including those with disabilities, to walk,
roll and bike to school
Encourage bicycling and walking to
school as a safer and more appealing
transportation alternative, thereby
encouraging a healthy and active
lifestyle from an early age
Facilitate planning, development, and
implementation of projects/activities
that will improve safety and reduce
traffic through new sidewalks, bike
paths and improved
intersections/crossings

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL GRANT
The Safe Routes to School Program
(SRTS) is a federal Transportation
Alternatives Program funded by the
Michigan Department of
Transportation (MDOT), working with
the Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF)
and Michigan State University (MSU).

Fresh off their win at the 2026 Great Lakes MATE ROV Competition - the UR² Alpena High School Robotics Team will be featured in our next "Sanctuary Presents" this Thursday night beginning at 6pm.
Come get a behind-the-scenes look at how Alpena High School students build cutting-edge underwater robots inspired by real-world needs.
Plus, you'll hear how they are preparing for the World Championships in Newfound, Canada this June!
This presentation is free, open to all ages, and concludes with a live Q&A with the student team. Bring your curiosity and well wishes as they move into the World Championships!

Each month, we’ll select questions that are intriguing, timely, or widely relevant to answer in the Superintendent's Update, Central Office communications, school newsletters, or even at Board meetings.

While we may not be able to address every question, we’re committed to answering as many as we can.
