Hinks Graduate Comes Back to Make a Big Impact

On June 2nd, Hinks Elementary hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new sensory space created by Hinks graduate and current middle school student Autumn Batory. She spearheaded this project after securing a grant through the Honor Society. She managed every aspect of the room's development, including research, budgeting, design, and setup. To complete the space, she also organized a group of peers to create custom artwork, resulting in a dedicated area where all students can go when they need a place to recharge.
A sensory room is a dedicated, controlled space designed to stimulate, calm, or regulate a person’s senses. They are widely used by individuals with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders to manage sensory overload, reduce anxiety, and improve focus.

Alpena High School Career and Technical Education- Algebra in Manufacturing class (AMP UP) students traveled to Besser Elementary to work with students in Mrs. Kwiatkowski's 1st grade class and teach them the process involved in making T-Shirts. This is one of the processes the high school students do in their manufacturing based CTE class business. Students were able to learn about transfers, measurement, and the heat pressing process, all while making their own shirt with the high school students to be able to wear on their last day of school. It was a great collaborative learning experience for both the AMP UP and 1st grade students.
