ACES Academy Students Get a Taste of Business at Friendly Foodees.
Students from ACES Academy recently got a firsthand look at what it takes to run a successful business during a visit to Friendly Foodees, a fully vegan bagel and coffee shop founded by ACES alumnus Chris Chrzan-Class of 2006. Rockstar Barista, Kaitlynn Kruczynski, is also an ACES graduate-Class of 2019. The experience offered students a unique opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the real world of entrepreneurship, learning valuable lessons about innovation, perseverance, and the power of thinking outside the box.
During their visit, the students explored the ins and outs of running a plant-based café, from menu creation to customer service, and even the importance of branding and business identity. They saw how Friendly Foodees has carved out a niche in Northern Michigan’s food scene by blending bold flavors, allergen-friendly options, and a deep connection to art and music culture.
More than just a learning experience, the visit was a hands-on taste test of the creativity behind the business. Students sampled the shop’s signature bagels, bagel sandwiches made with tempeh and jackfruit, fresh-pressed juices, and rich espresso drinks crafted with a variety of non-dairy milks. For many, it was an eye-opening moment—realizing that plant-based food can be just as flavorful and satisfying as traditional options.
For Chrzan, welcoming ACES Academy students into his shop was a full-circle moment. His journey from student to entrepreneur showcases the potential that lies within each young mind, reinforcing the idea that passion and hard work can transform an idea into reality.
By stepping into the world of Friendly Foodees, ACES students didn’t just learn about business—they experienced the power of creativity, resilience, and daring to be different.
