MDE LogoThe Michigan Department of Education has recognized Alpena High School and Sanborn Elementary School as "Reward" exemplar schools for the State of Michigan. Reward schools are those that have achieved one or more of the following distinctions:

  • top 5% of schools on the Overall School Rankings
  • top 5% of schools making the greatest gains in achievement (improvement metric) or
  • "Beating the Odds" by outperforming the school's predicted ranking and/or similar schools.

Also, in a letter to Alpena Public Schools Superintendent Dr. John VanWagoner, State Superintendent Brian J. Whiston congratulated Thunder Bay Junior High for being removed from "Focus School" status. This indicates that the school has successfully closed the gap between the lowest and highest performing students.

For more information on Reward schools, visit the MDE site.

We join with Superintendent Whiston in congratulating AHS, Sanborn and TBJHS for their hard work!
