State Raises MEAP and MME Cut Scores The Michigan State Board of Education has changed the way state achievement tests are scored. Scores for students throughout the state will appear lower as a result. The new "cut scores" raise the number of correct answers a student must score in order to be considered "proficient" on state learning targets. Cut scores were changed to reflect a level of achievement that ensures students are ready for work in their next grade level and are college- and career-ready when they leave high school. These higher standards apply to the MEAP tests (given to 3rd through 9th graders) and the MME test (given to 11th graders). Michigan is one of only three states (including New York and Tennessee) to align expectations to these higher standards. Alpena Public Schools is working hard to adjust our teaching and our curriculum to help students meet these challenging new standards.
